Two Jamaican Cross Country runners have been named Runner of the Week for their respective conferences in back to back weeks.

Yesterday University of Arkansas at Little Rock senior Shanieke Watson was named the Sun Belt Conference Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week by the league office.

Watson captured the individual title at the UCA Cross Country Challenge last Saturday, posting a time of 18:28.94 in the 5K race. Watson’s effort helped lead Little Rock to a second-place finish among the 11-team field.

The former Holmwood Technical High School athlete earned the honour a week after her compatriot Tariq Fullerton won the MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) men’s Runner of the Week award for his outstanding performance at the inaugural Labor Day Classic in Washington, D.C.

The former Munro College athlete, who was running his first Cross Country race in two years, ran 16:20.51, which was the MEAC’s best time of the weekend at the 6K distance. He won individual gold by nearly 10 seconds, while helping HU win the event.

Watson was even more dominant, beating a field of 98 runners with her closest opponent more than 37 seconds behind her.

She now has two top-four finishes through the first two weeks of the season.
