Rikkoi Brathwaite opened his collegiate career with a bang, smashing the British Virgin Islands national 60 metres indoor record in winning the event at the Hoosiers Open last night.

The Indiana University redshirt freshman clocked 6.68 seconds, nipping Purdue University’s Samso Colebrooke, who was credited with the same time, for the win.

The time broke the meet record set in 2013 by Shane Crawford (6.69) and eclipsed Dion Crabbe’s 16 year old national record of 6.71 (2002).

It significantly improves on his previous best of 6.75 set in the preliminaries and sits atop the early season NCAA rankings.

The 19 year old opened his collegiate account by lowering his previous best of 6.78 set in January of last year when he finished runner-up to Colebrooke in heat 2.

The Road Town, Tortola, BVI native was outstanding at the high school level for IMG Academy in Florida ranking 16th nationally at 100m (10.34). He made the semi-finals of the IAAF World U20 Championships in Finland last year.
