Barbadian Jonathan Jones clocked the fastest time of all qualifiers to the semi-final round of the Boys 400 metres at the IAAF World U20 Athletics Championships in Tampere, Finland.
Jones clocked 46.05 seconds to win heat 5 comfortably from lane 8. The 19 year old, who was shocked at the time, finished over a second ahead of the USA’s Howard Fields (47.08).
It was a big personal best for Jones, surpassing his previous best of 46.30 set in February.
Event favourite Christopher Taylor is the 2nd fastest heading into the semis after a very comfortable 46.14 to win heat 6 while compatriot Chantz Sawyers also comfortably won his heat in 46.52.
The Bahamas’ Correy Sherrod missed out after finishing 4th in heat 1 in 48.22.
