Jamaican sprinter Dianna Johnson opened her indoor season with an NCAA Division 2 automatic qualifier at the ASU Early Grizzly Open this past weekend.

The defending indoor 60 metres national champion clocked 7.40 seconds to finish second behind Adams State University teammate Kandace Thomas, who won the event in 7.38.

Both are the only automatic qualifiers in the 60m in Division 2 so far, sitting first and second in the early season rankings, respectively.

Johnson’s time leads three Jamaicans (Rene Medley 7.52 and Taishia Pryce 7.52 – 10th) in this week’s USTFCCCA All-College Top 10 times in the event, ranking fourth.

Last season the former Holmwood Technical athlete made history by becoming only the fourth woman in NCAA Division 2 history to win back to back 60m indoor national titles.
