Jamaican thrower Devia Brown broke the longstanding NJCAA Women’s Outdoor shot put record yesterday at the Mesa Indoor & Multis.

With a best heave of 16.94 metres, the Central Arizona College sophomore eclipsed the previous record of 16.86m set by Mt. San Antonio College’s Grace Apiafi’s in 1990.

The former Hydel High School athlete hit the mark on her first and only registered attempt on the day. She finished well ahead of teammate Cherisse Murray (Trinidad & Tobago) 16.09m.

Though done at an indoor meet, the event was contested outdoors, therefore it will be considered officially as an outdoor record.

The reigning NJCAA Outdoor shot put champion came into her second collegiate season with a personal best of 14.68m.

She has not only improved upon that by over two metres but has done the same in the weight throw as well.

The 20 year old completed a huge day with another massive personal best on her way to winning the weight throw (17.67m) by almost a full metre ahead of runner-up Yessie Valencia (16.69m).

The mark ranks No.2 in the NJCAA this season. It’s a significant improvement on her previous best of 17.15m done in a win at the Pima Aztec Indoor Invitational last week.
