Jamaican prodigy Christopher Taylor is the Pan American U20 Junior 200 metres champion after he beat USA phenom Tyrese Cooper at the Pan American Junior Championships in Peru a short while ago.
The 18-year-old Taylor clocked a new personal best 20.38 seconds (+0.5m/s) to finish ahead of Cooper (20.59). The mark was a significant improvement on his previous best of 20.59 set just this year in March.
This is Jamaica’s first gold at the championships after Kevin Nedrick won silver in the boys discus and Tissanna Hickling won bronze in the girls long jump.
Brazil’s Derrick de Souza Silva (19) won the bronze with 20.77 ahead of the Trinidad & Tobago pair of Akanni Hislop and Jerod Elcock, who finished 4th and 5th respectively.
Barbados R. Clarke (21.38) and St. Vincent & Grenadines Jabari Michael-Khensu (21.44) rounded out the field in 6th and 7th.
Taylor’s time is the 5th fastest in the world this season in the U20 category.
