Cherrise Murray breaks NJCAA Shot Put Championship Record en route to winning National Title

Trinidad & Tobago thrower Cherrise Murray is the NJCAA Outdoor Championships Women’s shot put champion.

The Central Arizona Freshman upset favourite Devia Brown to win the national title.

Coming into the championships with a season’s and personal best 15.72 metres, Murray pretty much had to break the NJCAA Championship record to beat the inform Brown, who was the runaway season leader with a best of 16.37m.

She did exactly that, uncorking a massive 16.49m to shatter Janeah Stewart (Iowa Central) previous record of 16.23m.

The 24 year old Murray broke the 16m mark for the first time on her third attempt but hit the winning mark on her penultimate throw to win just ahead of Barton County CC’s Latavia Maines, who hit her big new personal best of 16.46m on her final attempt.

Despite a solid series with five throws well over 15m, which included marks of 15.92m and 15.89m twice, Brown was third best on the day and had to settle for bronze.

The title completes the indoor-outdoor shot put double after winning the indoor national title in March.
