Jamaican sprint sensation Briana Williams clocked the fastest time of all qualifiers to the semi-final round of the Girls 100 metres at the IAAF World U20 Athletics Championships in Tampere, Finland.
Williams clocked 11.28 (WIND: +1.9m/s) seconds to win heat 3 quite comfortably ahead of Brazil’s Lorraine Martins (11.52).
The 16 year old USA-based sprinter had her usual fast start before easing off the gas at the end.
Her compatriot Ockera Myrie had a tougher time finishing 3rd (11.70) in heat 4 well behind Great Britain’s Kristal Awuah, who clocked a new personal best to win the heat comfortably in 11.35 but was an automatic qualifier.
The Trinidad & Tobago pair of Jenea Spinks and Akilah Lewis also qualified after finishing 3rd (11.58) and 4th (11.67) in heat 3 respectively. The Bahamas Jaida Knowles also advanced after her 3rd (11.71) place finish in heat 5.
However, Antigua & Barbuda’s could not advance after finishing 7th (11.83) in heat 3.
