Sixty-five athletes from or of Caribbean heritage qualified to take part in individual events at the 2018 NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Track & Field National Championships set for June 6-9 in Eugene, Oregon, USA after their performances at the NCAA East and West Regional qualifiers held over the past weekend.

All qualifiers can now count themselves among the top 24 individuals in their event nationally, whittled down from the 96 total who took part in the regional qualifiers (48 in each).

The 63 qualifiers from last weekend’s east and west preliminaries add to the three (Tyra Gittens, Ayesha Champagnie, and Adrian Riley) who already qualified by virtue of being ranked in the top 24 of the decathlon and heptathlon (the combined events are not are not contested at the preliminaries).

At the prelims, eight athletes set new personal best marks while four more had new season’s bests as they battled for qualification to the season’s showpiece event.

The qualifiers are from 11 different countries in the region with Jamaica leading the way with 41 (23 women, 18 men). The Bahamas was the next most prominent country with 8 qualifiers (5 women, 3 men), followed by Trinidad & Tobago with 6 qualifiers (4 women, 2 men), Barbados (2 men) and Guyana (1 man, 1 woman) with 2 qualifiers each and Puerto Rico (1 woman), Antigua & Barbuda (1 man), St. Kitts & Nevis (1 man), Montserrat (1 man), Grenada (1 man) and the British Virgin Islands (1 woman) also represented.

The qualifiers span 14 separate events on the track and in the field, with six of the qualifiers – Portious Warren (shot put and discus), Jasmine Camacho Quinn (100m Hurdles and 200m), Andre Ewers (100m and 200m), Clayton Brown (high jump and triple jump), Brittany Bethel (100m and 200m) and Tyra Gittens (heptathlon and long jump), qualifying in two individual events each.

The men’s 100m, women’s 100m hurdles, men’s 400m, women’s 800m and men’s javelin are events with real prospects of a Caribbean national winning the national championship. The women’s 100m hurdles is expected to be hotly contested amongst the ladies from the region, all who have consistently been ranked in the NCAA top 10 times this season.
